Dr. Don Lofgren, Director
Dr. Lofgren earned a B.A. in Geology at the University of Minnesota in 1983,
an M.S. in Geology at the University of Montana in 1985, and a Ph.D. in
Paleontology at UC-Berkeley in 1990. His research interests include the
systematics and evolution of Cretaceous-Paleocene mammals, stratigraphy and
sedimentology of Cretaceous-Paleocene rocks of North America, and in
particular the Paleocene mammal faunas of the Goler Formation of California
and the North Horn Formation of Utah. At the museum, Dr. Lofgren directs the
acquisition, curation, and use of fossils and leads all field and lab
research efforts. He also teaches the Honors Advanced Study in Paleontology,
Museum Research, and Museum Afterschool classes at The Webb Schools.
Dr. Andrew Farke, Curator
Dr. Farke earned his B.Sc. in Geology at South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook
University in 2008. His research interests focus on the evolution and
paleobiology of the horned dinosaurs (ceratopsians, including the
three-horned Triceratops), function of the skull in horned mammals,
dinosaurs of western North America, and the vertebrate paleontology of
Madagascar. Within the museum, Dr. Farke engages in curation and research of
fossil specimens and also is in charge of implementing the Paleontology for
Educators workshop.
Mark Torres, Assistant Curator
Mark graduated from the Webb School of California in 2006 and is currently
attending Pitzer College where he is pursuing a degree in Geology. Mark
manages the museum’s collections. His duties include processing loans,
accessioning and cataloging specimens, entering locality data, conducting
specimen inventories, and other important tasks needed to manage the
museum’s large and ever growing collection of fossils. Additionally, he
assists Dr. Farke and Dr. Lofgren with research and curation projects as
needed.
Linda Petrone, Public Outreach
Coordinator
Linda Petrone assumes a variety of roles at the museum. She schedules and
coordinates all group tours, supervises the museum’s docents and leads
museum tours, informing young and old about the history and science behind
each specimen on display. Mrs. Petrone also manages the museum gift shop and
serves as secretary for the Board of Trustees of the Alf Museum.
Kathy Sanders, Museum Educator
Kathy Sanders earned a B. A degree in Art/ Art History at California State
University, Long Beach in 1981. She conducts the museum's public programs
and enrichment classes for children, develops and illustrates the museum's
educational materials and leads the museum's Classroom Science Connections
traveling presentations. In addition to her outreach roles, Mrs. Sanders is
the scientific illustrator for museum research manuscripts.
Karen McGuirk, Public Outreach Assistant
Karen McGuirk has over 20 years of museum and college volunteer work
experience in the fields of paleontology and archaeology. Ms. McGuirk
assists the Public Outreach Coordinator in various capacities such as
leading museum tours, assisting with docent training programs, and
administering Family Science Discovery Days.
