Educator's Guide

The Educator’s Guide is an essential component of your Alf Museum experience. You will find the appropriate guide for your use under the headings below. If you will be visiting the Alf Museum for a tour, you will use the Educator’s Guide for grades K-4 or the Educator’s Guide for grades 5-8. If you will be receiving an in classroom Science Connections presentation, you will use the Science Connections Educator’s Guide for grades K-4. We encourage you to download and print the applicable Educator’s Guide to use prior to your visit to the museum or in classroom presentation. The Educator’s Guide includes background information about the Alf Museum and the science of paleontology, a summary of our museum guidelines and what to expect, a pre-visit checklist, a series of California Science Content-aligned activities/exercises for classroom use before and/or after your visit or in classroom presentation, and a list of relevant terms and additional resources. Please contact us if you need an Educator’s Guide mailed to you.

School Group Museum Tours

During your visit, your school group will receive a detailed tour of the museum’s two fossil-filled exhibition halls as we discuss various highlights from the history of life. Your group will also view a short film which takes them along on a recent dinosaur discovery made by the museum. This presentation enables your group to see the more dynamic, scientifically-active side of the Alf Museum.

Classroom Science Connections

These new traveling programs combine in-class presentations and hands-on exercises to teach major scientific concepts using fossils. All programs include an engaging “fossil talk and touch” portion followed by fun activities which reinforce the concepts covered in the class presentation. Please note that most of these programs are only offered to one class at a time (the exception being our “Great Science Connections” variety).
